Why I love running!

11 Jan

If you are one of the people close to me in my life, you are also one of the people with which this very conversation took place:

Alex: ” I’m going to start running again and actually do some races this time, I am really excited about it!”

Random Family/Friend: “Ugh why, I hate running!”

And that is usually the response you get from anyone, who doesnt run or play sports, and even some who do play sports hate running. So why do I like it so much?

Well it all goes back to our upbringing, our parents worked really hard when we were little and we were so lucky that our grandparents live next door. Because of that we never had to go to daycare we just walked to their house. Our Grandfather Alexander (who I am named after Im Alexandra though) always had us playing sports and as we got older put us in training every summer. My grandfather built us a soccer net in his back yard, a golf course, a tennis court across their driveway , a volley ball net next to their garden and had us swim races across their above ground pool. We have a lot of land at our two house.  We got involved in many sports because of this and always love being athletes. I played softball, soccer and cheerleading and I enjoyed them all. This laid the groundwork for my love of being active.

When I got to college I decided I wanted to play a sport and signed up to play rugby. I played all four years of college and met most of my college best friends from rugby! Its pretty much running for 80 minutes straight. At first it was pretty hard as I wasnt used to a sport in which the clock never stops and neither do you. You get tackled you get up and keep running, its a tough sport but it taught me a lot and made me a better athlete. I always took rugby very seriously even though we were a club sport and by senior year was the captain and President of our team. I would spend each day running at practice and then go to the gym and run. Then in our last regular spring season game before the beast of the east tournament I cracked my ribs tackling a girl. There is nothing you can do for your ribs and they are still dented in more so than the left side, but they did a number or my physical abilities.

^—————————-Thats Me!

This is the team my sophmore year. So basically all of that built a foundation that I am not building on myself to get where I want to be. Yes I used to be able to run at an 7.5-8 minute pace, but now it is more like 10. I will get back to where I was but it takes time and dedication.

So I am still sick, I am going to try and train a bit tonight if I actually feel better, but I did see two ladies running outside today because it is so nice and I was so jealous!

That is awesome! I always thought rugby would be such a fun sport but never had to opportunity to try it out. Hope you feel better and get back to it!

It is probably my favorite sport ever and the people who play have such a strong sense of friendship, which is why I also like running so much!
